We left San Diego and 85 degree weather and headed towards Southeast California which is HOT. Below are the first 3 stops on our way back to VB.
Nice winery and grounds to relax.
Well shaded with fake turf grass. Saw a lot of fake grass in Southern California.
Kami's abbreviated charcuterie board. Nice touch on drinking the Chardonnay with aluminum stadium cups. 😆
Lets start off with the obvious.......I took this picture at 10 am in the Shade of Calico Campground.
Entrance to town which was about 200 yards from our campsite. By the way, we were the only dummies staying at the campsite.
So there are stores in the town for souvenirs and a restaurant. We didn't expect to see anyone but surprisingly there were quit a few buses that came thru with lots of foreigners trying to get a glimpse of how life was in the west. Met people from Germany, Poland, and France the day we were there.
Fire water station. Water filled bends and hanging buckets above.
Getting silly with jail and pine box below.
Cemetery located just outside the town that is still in use today with the latest tombstone dated early 2000's.
Belle Marie Winery is located in Escondido, CA. Part of the Harvest Host connection that allows us to stay overnight in their parking lot. The property is very nice and set up for large groups with good shade. I bought a bottle of Chardonnay and Kami put a nice charcuterie board together and we enjoyed in their courtyard. Weather was still reasonable and we were able to sleep comfortably that night with the windows open.
Ample parking in the rear of the winery for us to set up overnight.
Next stop was Green Tree Golf Club in Victorville, CA (another Harvest Host). Never played a desert course. They had grass on the tee box and on the putting green but spotty on the fairway. Not unexpected I guess. So we have been traveling back on interstate 40 that parallels Route 66. A lot of Route 66 is closed off due to road conditions. We tried on several occasions to jump on the route but found signs saying closed at this junction or that junction so we just stayed on the interstate.

Hot and windy, it affected my game. Wait, Kami just informed me I don't have game. |
I had booked Calico Ghost Town in Yermo, CA but should have paid more attention to the weather at this time of year (late August) because the high for two days we were there was 113 degrees. We have never been in 113 degrees before. There was NO SHADE at the campground. I am thankful they had 50 amp power so we could run both A/C units. If we couldn't then we would have been miserable. The units got the temps inside the trailer down to 85 degrees.....I consider that impressive. So the campground is part of the ghost town. The town is an old Silver and Borax mining area started 1882. They have recreated part of the buildings from back in the day.
Most graves had rocks covering the top of the grave since the ground is rock. Most didn't have tombstones since they were from the late 1800's.
